Remembering John Lennon with His Words

Today marks the 35 year anniversary of John Lennon’s death. He was shot on Dec. 8th 1980 by a guy named Mark David Chapman, who apparently didn’t even have an issue with Lennon. He simply understood how famous and idolized Lennon was and did it for “Attention, bottom line”.

I wasn’t even alive at this time and yet he still remains a huge icon throughout my lifetime. John was a rebel who stood for peace; a free-spirited rock & roller who people admired before and long after his death. His words really stuck with his fans (so much that there were even suicides following his death), but even some of those younger than me live and breathe by his quotes. In honor of John and this day, here are my personal favorite quotes by him:

“I’m not going to change the way I look or the way I feel to conform to anything. I’ve always been a freak. So I’ve been a freak all my life and I have to live with that, you know. I’m one of those people.”

“I’m cynical about society, politics, newspapers, government. But I’m not cynical about life, love, goodness, death. That’s why I really don’t want to be labeled a cynic.”

“You’re all geniuses, and you’re all beautiful. You don’t need anyone to tell you who you are. You are what you are. Get out there and get peace, think peace, and live peace and breathe peace, and you’ll get it as soon as you like.”

“Nobody controls me. I’m uncontrollable. The only one who controls me is me, and that’s just barely possible.”

“We were smoking marijuana for breakfast. We were well into marijuana and nobody could communicate with us, because we were just all glazed eyes, giggling all the time. In our own world.”

“Peace is not something you wish for; It’s something you make, Something you do , Something you are, And something you give away”

“When I was about twelve, I used to think I must be a genius, but nobody’s noticed. Either I’m a genius or I’m mad, which is it? “No,” I said, “I can’t be mad because nobody’s put me away; therefore I’m a genius.” Genius is a form of madness and we’re all that way. But I used to be coy about it, like me guitar playing. But if there’s such a thing as genius — I am one. And if there isn’t, I don’t care”
