Two Dudes are Changing the Red Solo Cup Game

The Red Solo Cup is arguably the most iconic college symbol in the United States. But if you look closely, you’ll notice anything but uniformity. Most students choose their cups from among different types of Red Solo Cup alternatives, and everyone pays a different price per cup.

Kahn and his long-time friend Doug Halperin formed the idea for Drinkables in January 2016. They recalled how frustrating it was in college to pay upwards of 15¢ for red party cups while restaurants were paying a fraction of that price for the same cups. They knew there had to be a better way.

At the same time, they were keenly aware of how important the college demographic is to advertising companies and brands. College students are just beginning to make their own financial decisions and making a good impression on them can generate lifetime consumer/brand relationships. Furthermore, while college students heavily influence the spending behaviors of family members and peers, brands often misunderstand and improperly target them. So Kahn and Halperin put those two problems together and Drinkables was born.

Drinkables launched its first campaign at the University of Miami earlier this year. They partnered with Uber to bring free ride credits to new and existing users on campus, as well as with Gulf Liquor to offer students a 10% discount on all purchases. The test was a huge hit. They sold over nine thousand cups in two days, and students redeemed hundreds of the coupon codes.

Now, with the start of the new school year, Drinkables is launching their service at colleges across the East Coast, and Southeastern and Mid-Western United States.
